Punch — Original Colored Pencil Artwork | 9 × 12
SOMETIMES COMFORT COMES FROM THE MOST UNEXPECTED PLACE. 🐒🧡
If you've followed Punch's story, you probably understand exactly why I had to paint him.
Punch is a young Japanese macaque whose story captured hearts around the world. After his mother did not care for him shortly after birth, keepers at Ichikawa City Zoo stepped in to hand-raise him. They eventually gave him a soft stuffed orangutan—something he could cling to for comfort and security while growing and learning to navigate life around the other macaques. Reuters
The images of tiny Punch curled up against his oversized orange companion became almost impossible to forget.
And that's the moment I wanted to paint.
HOLD ON TO WHAT BRINGS YOU COMFORT.
There's something incredibly universal about Punch's attachment to his stuffed orangutan.
It's a tiny animal finding security in something soft enough to hold onto.
In this piece, I chose to capture Punch asleep against his companion—not the difficult moments, but the quiet moment when he feels safe enough to rest.
To me, this painting is about comfort, vulnerability, resilience, and the need for connection—things that extend far beyond Punch's story.
Sometimes we all need something—or someone—to hold onto while we figure out where we belong.
ORIGINAL COLORED-PENCIL ARTWORK
Punch was created entirely by hand in colored pencil. I focused heavily on texture: the delicate features and fine fur of the young macaque against the long, warm orange fibers of his stuffed companion.
This listing is for the original artwork—not a print or reproduction.

Millions of people saw something in this tiny monkey.
Maybe it was his vulnerability. Maybe it was his determination. Maybe it was simply watching him find comfort in something when he needed it most.
Whatever the reason, Punch reminded a lot of people just how deeply animals can make us feel.
One original. Drawn entirely by hand. Inspired by a little monkey, his stuffed companion, and the comfort of having something to hold onto. 🧡
